Cryo comes from the Greek word krous, which means “icy” or “cold.” And despite its current fame in the wellness world, cryotherapy has actually been around for centuries. Have you ever put an ice pack on you knee after a fall? Well then, congrats! You’ve already done cryotherapy—technically. We’ve known for years that icing an injury can help reduce pain, swelling, and inflammation, so whole body cryotherapy just takes this concept to a new level.
Naturally, the first question many of us have is “Does it hurt?” Exposing your body to subzero temperatures does seem like a pretty unbearable experience, but people say it’s actually more tolerable than an ice bath since the air is dry instead of wet—which makes it feel more like standing in front of a freezer on a hot day.
The cryosauna uses nitrogen gas to lower the client’s skin surface temperature from normal body temperature to 30 degrees Fahrenheit in 30 to 45 seconds and keeps it that way for 2-3 minutes. The skin reacts to the cold and sends messages to the brain that stimulates the body to go into survival mode by shunting blood from the extremities to the core where the blood is enriched with oxygen, enzymes and nutrients. As the body re-warms, this nutrient rich blood is pushed back to the extremities. Enriched blood promotes internal organ regeneration, expels toxins from subcutaneous layers, initiates cell renewal process, triggers replacement of damaged cells and eliminates dead cells from peripheral tissues. Or simply put, it is rejuvenation of the body at the cellular level.
Cryotherapy decreases recovery time by up to 50%, to improve ability to train, recover and perform. Adding cryotherapy to your regimen will help keep your body in peak physical shape and give you an edge on your opponents. This therapy allows for more intense, higher volume training; enabling you to maximize your full potential and enjoy these benefits.
Cryotherapy is a natural anti inflammatory helps with Pain Management and has helped relieve chronic pain not only for arthritis, fibromyalgia and other rheumatoid diseases, but also due to migraines, muscle soreness, multiple sclerosis, and chronic pain syndromes.
Research has shown that cryotherapy can increase the amount of white blood cells, the soldier cells that fight infection. This increased immunity means your body can identify and more quickly attack foreign organisms which may cause illness.
Expect to burn between 500-800 calories with each cryotherapy session! Cryotherapy speeds up your metabolism for 6 to 8 hours!
If you have rheumatoid arthritis, you may experience poor lymph flow as the disease progresses. Along with tissue swelling, pain in the joints increases, joints lose their function, and the skin changes color. Lymph drainage massage can help ease these later-stage rheumatoid arthritis symptoms.
Cryotherapy can also benefit your sleep patterns because it creates positive hormone responses in your body. When your body is exposed to the extremely cold temperatures in whole body cryotherapy, your body produces hormones that are directly related to sleep and relaxation. It improves your circadian rhythm which is also known as our sleep/wake cycle.
Anxiety can be a tricky thing to manage; however, it can be managed. With the help of cryotherapy, it can even be managed quickly. Science has already shown that cryotherapy stimulates physiological reactions of the human body which result in analgesic, anti-swelling, hormonal, immune, and circulatory system reactions. Apart from activating the body’s system of temperature regulation, there is also a hormonal response, which increases body metabolism and the concentrations of adrenaline, noradrenaline, adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), cortisone, endorphins, oxytocin, and pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC), and β-endorphins in blood plasma. The release of these all natural anti-anxiety hormones, results in improved mood and lower anxiety levels.
Whole Body Cryotherapy for skin rejuvenation may seem like an unconventional type of all natural treatment. However, this safe non-invasive therapy method boosts the immune system in numerous ways, hence stimulating all the body functions to perform better. This, in turn, helps achieve a smoother, healthier, and younger-looking skin. Regular whole body cryotherapy users have noticed clearer skin, improved collagen production, less wrinkles, cellulite reduction and less toxins in your skin!
Please be sure you have completed your intake form prior to arrival. Once you have arrived, you undress in a private dressing room (see the cryotherapy rules page for what to wear). While you are getting ready, your cryo-tech will pre-cool the cryosauna. After the pre-cool concludes, the operator will help you enter the machine.
Once inside the cryosauna, the operator will close the door and allow you to disrobe (if you are wearing a towel)! Please take a moment to review our RULES for a successful cryotherapy session!
Now that you’re in, this is where things really get interesting! Your cryo-tech will hit the “start” button and you will then start to feel the cold, dry, nitrogen vapor surrounding you. Don't worry... the ambient temperature of the tank slowly drops throughout your session. Your cryotech will talk to you to keep your mind off of the chill. They will also remind you to keep your chin up and to rotate now and then.
The cryosauna uses nitrogen gas and converts it to a vapor, which lowers your skin surface temperature from normal body temperature to 30 degrees Fahrenheit in 30 to 45 seconds and keeps it that way for 2-3 minutes.
Pretty soon, the 3 minutes are up and tada!.. the session is over! Congrats, you experienced cryotherapy! You are then handed your towel back (if you wore one) and can exit the cryo-chamber with or without the help of the tech. That wasn’t so bad, was it?
While you're getting dressed, you may feel your arms/legs have a warm, tingling sensation! That is all of your super healthy blood rushing to your extremities - you're literally feeling the healing as it happens (so cool)!
Benefits peak 4-5 hours from the time of your session! Each session is compounding... meaning, the more you come, the better you feel, for longer!
There are no restrictions whatsoever! You can go about your day just as your normally would - but feeling amazing!
